River Research

The Chestertown Christian Academy science department has joined the Chester River Association as an official "Chester Tester." Twice a month we collect water from Radcliffe Creek for testing. At the collection site we put fixing chemicals in our water sample to help us identify the dissolved oxygen at the time collected. The water and air temperature are recorded, as well as, observations of plant and animal life present. We note any physical changes in the site such as odor, color, depth, etc. Back in the lab we use a LaMotte chemical kit with a chromometer provided by the Chester River Association to test the ammonia, phosphate, pH, nitrate, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity of our water samples. The results are entered by computer to the Chester River Association. Students learn valuable lab skills while being a part of the team that helps monitor the health of the Chester River and its tributaries.
